Straying away from the cliché that all girls are meant to be, well, girly, a very interesting type of women started to get more attention nowadays. As most societal roles became fair game for everyone, we live I what I dubbed the “age of the tomboys”. What Defines a Tomboy?
The definition can be a little flexible at times, but a girl is said to be a tomboy when she sports traits often associated with men. The word itself came to be in the 16th century and originally meant “rude, boisterous boy”, and only decades later started to be applied to describe women who either dressed in a more comfort-oriented manner, had a more carefree behavior or those with masculine traits or interests. What is their appeal?
While most of them are not very cuddly and traditionally feminine, they make it up for it with a whole unique experience. Here are some of the perks:
Shared interests: let’s face it, boys and girl are different, and as such, they often have different interests. It is not very hard to see couples who have their separate hobbies, tastes and behavior, leading to disagreements, misunderstanding and overall bad times. On the other side, tomboys will have interests closer to a man’s, be it for movies, games, activities and more. Expect a barbecue lunch followed by a hike or even some sports instead of romantic comedies and knitting.
They’re easier to understand: unlike conventional girl behavior which can be a true enigma for men, it is much less complicated to “get” a tomboy’s head.
